Is Facebook Worse than Big Brother? Your Facebook Profile Would Give the FBI Envy!

Ever since 9/11 our rights have been slowly eroded. The mantra being that we need to do these things for security. To which I quote Benjamin Franklin, “Those who would give up their liberty for more security, deserve neither liberty nor security.” It’s not a matter of whether you’re doing something you would be ashamed of (I pray that is not the case with any of you… or me), but rather asking the question, what gives anyone the right to gather private information on anyone, other than if he or she is committing a crime?

Social Media Background Checks Are Not Just For Employment!

While most people are very wise about their privacy, teenagers seem to think that they live in a force field that will prevent nothing bad from happening to them. It’s always the OTHER person who gets caught, gets sick, gets addicted, gets pregnant, etc. While that is enough of an issue to deal in itself, they take this same carefree attitude when it comes to posting their crazy whims online. What may be popular to a small circle of friends and every like-minded kook who combs through social-media profiles, looking for something juicy to gossip about, will not be so popular when you’re out of high school and starting a real life.

Do You Know Who’s Watching You Online?

Since every computer is issued an “Internet Protocol” address (IP address, which is reflected numerically, e.g. 192.100.1.162), wherever you go a digital trail is recorded. Not only is the trail recorded, what you looked at, searched for and clicked on is also captured. Imagine what a company could do with this information? What could the government do? What could a child molester or rapist do? The implications are staggering! But, what choice do we have if we need to use the Internet? You can’t crawl back to the Stone Age! Read on and learn how you can protect yourself and your privacy.

Is Your Organization Part of the Conversation?

People are tired of being sold! Much technology is about removing advertising and commercials. Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), Netflix, MP3 players, pop-up blockers – even programmers give away their software (freeware or shareware) with ads embedded, knowing people are so fed up that many will pay for the ad-free version. So if the social-sphere gets a whiff that you’re there to sell them, you will be branded a pariah. It’s about them and not you. You are there to help by providing a solution to a problem with useful information. It’s the old Zig Ziglar approach: “If you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want.”

Social Media: A Personal Experience

This article was difficult to write, because I had to think of what would help the average user NOT interested in becoming a guru? So this is NOT an end-all be-all article, but rather some things that are sometimes overlooked to make it a more enjoyable experience.

There are three reasons why people use social media and most use it for more than one, and they are: to stay in touch with family and friends, to find information on topics of interest and to market oneself, product or company. Read on and learn more on how to do it effectively.

The Power of Words

Words have power! When one chooses words to express a message, they should choose them very carefully. Why? Well, quite simply, once words leave your mouth, you can’t take them back. And, the old saying of “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is not true.

The Marketing Paradigm Has Shifted!

Imagine building consortiums of friends and be able to speak to them directly. Imagine being able to know what one thinks about your company and be able to address positive and negative press in real time. Gone are the days when you had 24 hours to reply to an issue; with the Internet and social media, you are lucky if you have 24 minutes!
